Hilarious, laugh a minute surprises are exposed in every scene.  You gotta love these guys forUnion meeting their true devotion to family that drives them to utilize their most precious assets to support their families, save their marriages and raise their self esteem.  You will be so taken with the hilarious interactions that when a tender moment comes along with a heartfelt song, you are transported to a new plateau of appreciation for the talent on stage.

Noah and JeanetteOur beloved Director Patrick A’Hearn has gathered a wealth of talent for this production that stretches from the acclaimed Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Sally Struthers, back for her second appearance on the Riverside stage, to the new talent of David Pope, recruited from the audience of a previous show by Patrick A’Hearn.Jeanette 4

Sally plays the role of Jeanette Burmeister, a saucy cigarette toting broad who accompanies the guys on piano.  David plays Keno played by David Popethe young striptease star, Buddy (Keno) Walsh, who inspires the idea of stripping to make extra money when the out of work guys see their wives reaction to him at Tony Giordano’s Club.

Complimenting Patrick we welcome back the creative, award winning Choreographer Christopher Noffke and the expert musical direction of Jason Michael’s who also plays Reg Willoughby, another unemployed mill worker.

Technical challenges abound for the expanded staff of Stage, Lighting, and Audio  Technicians, Live Musicians, Wardrobe and Costume masters,Funeral with backs Scenic Artists and Set Designers.  Pieces change constantly with passing spaces and set coordinates frequently less than an inch.  At any one time, a coffin, a car, a tanning bed, a piano or a bathroom complete with urinals, sinks and stalls all share space with the buildings, actors Dave with Malcolm in carand live band.  Actors model new wardrobe pieces and costumes for five minutes before they peel them off and on to the next scene change where they do it all over again.  They dress for a steel mill, a night club, a funeral, job interviews and of course the piece to resistance; what’s this show called again?!!!  You won’t be bored!

Dave and Georgie 2Is this show too risqué for some?  Probably, but as director Patrick A’Hearn says in the Directors notes, “Ultimately, The Full Monty is a show about family and family values.  It’s about taking chances, and not accepting ‘NO’ for an answer.  It’sJerry and his son about being proud of who you are regardless of how you look or whom you choose to love.  …it’s message is much deeper

Harold and Vicki 2

than shedding one’s clothes – more about revealing who you are to others and, more importantly, to yourself.  The fear of full disclosure is huge but once it is conquered, the rewards are great and one’s fullest potential can be recognized.”Jerry on knee over Dave on floor

The Phantom is haunting Riverside Dinner Theater

Want a different perspective on The Phantom of the Opera story?  Don’t miss this thrilling and surprising twist on the events that allegedly transpired oh so long ago at The Paris Opera House.

Directed by the accomplished Broadway veteran Patti D’Beck, this production stars Riversides own Associate Artistic Director, Patrick A’Hearn as The Phantom.  Having haunted many theatrical venues in this title role, Patrick delights the audience with his expert stage presence and style.  As the phantom’s protégé, Christine, we welcome Quinn Vogt-Welch In her premier performance at the Riverside.  We are also pleased to have Andrea Kahane return to the Riverside stage as Carlotta.  You may remember Andrea in her recent roles as Golde in Fiddler on the Roof and Fraulein Kost in Cabaret.   With dual responsibility in this production, Jason J. Michael continues to wow us in the roles of Cholet and Musical Director.  Jason has showed many acting and directing talents since he joined Riverside in 2010.

Riverside continues to attract impeccable talent and excel in live musical theater, setting the standard for dinner theaters and live stage venues across the country.  Taking a minute to recognize what sets Riverside apart as a leader in live theatrical performances, we could start with the huge staff of dedicated choreographers, musical directors, carpenters, lighting designers, costume designers and seamstresses, sound wizards, and a myriad of technical staff that support every move of the actors and actresses.    Phantom is a perfect example of this as you will see from the elaborate set pieces and back-drops to the detailed period wardrobe.  And of course, what would The Paris Opera House and our story be without the spectacular chandelier, managed by the properties supervisor.  These talented creators of the scenes, if you will, join the producers, directors and management staff working together to provide the extensive repertoire of programs, Adult and Children’s shows and educational opportunities the Riverside offers to the Fredericksburg community. When you take it all in, it really is a special place we have here.

Don’t miss it.  Make your reservations now.  Phantom will run through October 14th and is sure to be a crowd pleaser.   Check out the Directors notes in the program.   I found them to be most enlightening as she gives a history of the actual Paris Opera House and the home of the illusive Phantom.

Connie shares that “The Rugosa section in the rose field is particularly spectacular this year!”  As any of you know who have visited Hartwood Roses before, Connie has taken on a Grandeos Love project with her Rose gardens.  While she loves having guests and buyers to the gardens, she reminds us that she is a one woman operation and does all the work herself so don’t expect perfection.  “What you WILL see when you visit are roses growing and thriving despite less-than-perfect care”, says Connie.  Also, there are some great baby plants that are available for purchase so you can nurture and ween them from their pots as they acclimate to your garden.

If you cannot visit in person, don’t forget you can visit and purchase your favorites on the Hartwood Roses website.  To stay up on everything going on at Hartwood Roses, like them on Facebook.

Those of you attending this weekends Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Spring Plant sale in Richmond will see Hartwood Roses there today, Friday May 4th 9 – 5 and tomorrow, Saturday, May 5th 9 – 3.

Riverside Dinner Theater presents CABARET

What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play.  Life is a Cabaret, old chum, Come to the Cabaret.

Come taste the wine,

Come hear the band,

Come blow your horn,

Start Celebrating;

Right this way,

Your table’s waiting

At Riverside Dinner Theater and Conference facility!!  Running now through April 29th, 2012; Come experience the tony award winning CABARET.

It’s 1929 Berlin and the Germany economy is on the verge of collapse.  The bustling Industrial Machine, dependent on foreign capital, much of which was American loans, came to a grinding halt when the American stock market crashed in October 1929.  The Great Depression was claiming the souls of the German people.

But in the wings was a young German named Adolf Hitler who saw this as an opportunity to drive the German Democratic government to ruin.  The German middle class, passionately struggled to maintain the culture of social and artistic innovation in Berlin.  Known as the nerve center, Berlin’s reputation for decadence, promiscuity and sexual liberation was fueled by the famous night life of the Cabarets.

Riverside’s production is brilliant, reenacting the original emotion and complicit character of the story from the initial decline of society right up to the concentration camp; from the smokey, seductive allure of the Cabaret known as the Kit Kat Klub  to the stark set of the boarding house where much of our story comes to life.

Masterfully enticing from beginning to end is Tommy NcNeal as the Master of Ceremonies, our Emcee in drag, as he brilliantly caresses the stage and everything on it.  You may remember Tommy as the Baker in Into the Woods, Billy Lawlor in 42nd Street, Munkustrap in Cats or my favorite role as Che Guevara in Evita.  We are thrilled to see him back at the Riverside.

Act One; Conflict, desperation and passion ooze as hope and opportunity present themselves in the arrival of a mediocre American writer seeking to become an accomplished author. Swept into the sleazy tumultuous Cabaret lifestyle and the struggles of 1929 Berlin he soon realizes that the natives are trying to scrape out a meager existence and desperately seek him as their opportunity for escape.  Mason Reich makes his debut appearance at Riverside in this role as the American Clifford Bradshaw.  From College Mason has an impressive list of Stage, Film, and live performances to his credit.  We certainly hope to see Mason on the stage at Riverside in the future.

Try as he might, Clifford can’t resist the wiles of our leading lady, the provocative, gorgeous Sally Bowles, brilliantly played by Nicole Foret Oberleitner.  Her first role at Riverside, Nicole’s extensive resume includes Broadway, off Broadway, top roles in theaters across the country, television, and live historical presentations. You will delight in her frothy, energetic, beguiling wiles and her fabulous wardrobe.  Kudos to the costume Designer, Aaron Mastin and the wardrobe supervisor, Gaye Law.

One of my favorite scenes is the opening of Act 2 where the girls at the Kit Kat Klub with our master of Ceremonies perform a kick line.  Their precision is impressive.   Another favorite is Act 2 scene 4 where Carol Hagy as Fraulein Schneider, comes alive in a powerful emotional performance of “What would you do?”.  Carol has graced the Riverside stage in 15 previous roles including my favorites; Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast and Jack’s mother in Into the Woods.

Definitely an adult show, you will be enthralled with the dramatic artistic infusion that almost makes you forget it is musical theater.  Everyone will recognize the song “Cabaret” but the heart wrenching performance of the song by Nicole Foret Oberleitner as Sally Bowles really spoke to me of the underlying fear and uncertainty rampant in the souls of the German people, Jew and non-Jew alike in those years of Hitler’s Third Reich.

Powerful and brilliantly executed, Cabaret is a “Must See” at Riverside Dinner Theater this March and April.  For more information go to their website http://www.riversidedt.com or call the box office at 540-373-4300 Monday – Wednesday 10 – 6; Thursday – Saturday 10 – 8 or Sunday 11 – 3.

Riverside Dinner Theater Presents FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

It’s 1905 and in the small Russian farming village of Anatevka, Tevye’s familiar world is about to change.  Traditions, long honored are being cast to the wind all around him and there seems to be nothing he can do about it, but, Embrace it.

“Without Tradition, life would be as shaky as…as…as a fiddler on the Roof” exclaims Tevye.  January 11, through March 4th, 2012, come see Tevye and his family struggle with the daily life of Russian Jews at the turn of the century and on the eve of the Russian Revolutionary period.

30 year theater veteran, Bob Kelly makes his Riverside Center debut as Production Director for this classic, award winning show.  With over 120 stage productions to his credit, Bob brings polished, professional dramatic art to the Riverside.  Professional and exemplifying the flavor and character of the period are the set and costume designs, all made right there on the premises by the Riverside scenic artists, costume and technical design staff.

Of course the stage is set to delight each audience with the extremely talented and versatile James Lawson in the lead role of Tevye.  Not his first time as Tevye, nor his first time captivating patrons at Riverside, who can forget his portrayal of Horace Vandergelder next to Sally Struthers in Hello Dolly, or his skirts and rouge as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray just to name a couple of his more recent accolades.

Jim is joined on stage by a formidable cast of performers, both new and familiar to the Riverside Theater.  One new face is that of Matt Macis who plays Motel the tailor, a meek yet bold object of Tevye’s oldest daughter’s affections.  Matt is no stranger to performing and has in his short 23 year life graced television, film, concerts, cabaret, nightclubs and even been a casino showroom headliner.

Two more notable familiar faces in Fiddler are Andrea Kahane in the role of Tevye’s wife Golde, and Teri Campbell, performing as Yente the matchmaker.  Andrea’s vocal accolades and professional roles are impressive spanning continents and including many famous opera companies in addition to her many roles on the stage at Riverside.  Teri, a relative newcomer to Fredericksburg brought her talents from the West VA stage and has made herself no stranger to the Riverside main stage and the children’s theater.

Seriously though, it is not really fare to only name a few of the fine talent in Fiddler.  Come and see the show for yourself and pick your favorite.  You won’t be disappointed.  With a full 3 course meal including all the coffee or tea you can put away it’s a fabulous deal.

Opening March 9th Cabaret,

Followed by Season XV:

Special Summer Showcase Theater at the Riverside: Giligan’s Island

Riverside Center presents their “Summer Showcase Theater” with delightful new shows for Wednesday and Sunday evenings only.  Opening tonight June 22nd, that hilarious Crew from the SS Minnow will tickle your funny bone and intrigue your sense of nostalgia with “Gilligan’s Island”.  The “Summer Showcase Theater” is a full feature evening with dinner at 6:00 and the show from 8:00 to around 10:30 pm.

Running through July 17th, this “summer showcase” is in addition to the main stage production at Riverside, currently Hello Dolly with Sally Struthers and opening July 9 through Sept. 11th, the Elvis extravaganza “All Shook Up”.

Gilligan’s Island has something to offer everyone from the brilliant island colors, the creative island sets, special sound, light and visual effects and fantastic casting.  In Riverside tradition this is a “musical” with a full score of great songs that will have you laughing, your heart pounding and a occasional but brief soft moment of solemn.  The episode even stretches to Science fiction as the Island history and future reveal themselves.

If you are like me and watched every episode of the TV show, Gilligan’s Island, you can’t miss this wonderful mega episode of the hilarious misadventures and crazy antics of the seven marooned crew members of the SS Minnow.  It’s a fun show.   “The characters were carefully cast to closely resemble all of the original… castaways”, says directors Barbara and Mel Cochran.  The casting is amazing but I especially liked Michael Taylor as The Professor.  I could not tell him apart from the original.

From the songs, the set, the special effects, the great acting and the appeal to all ages, this is a great way to enjoy a few summer hours.  Tickets are 42.00 for dinner and the show, 25.00 to just see the show.  Call the box office for reservations: (540) 370-4300.

Hello Dolly at Riverside Dinner Theater, starring Sally Struthers

Sally Struthers is brilliant and a natural as Dolly Levy in Riverside Centers current production of Hello Dolly.  Sally is joined by a superb cast providing a fresh but faithful production of this classic musical.  The group of people attending the show with me last week are still raving about it with comments such as “It rivals any ‘Broadway’ show I have seen” and “That was the best show I have seen yet at Riverside”.

Riverside pulled out all the stops for Hello Dolly, starting with Hello Sally! This is the first time the Riverside stage has been graced with an internationally known star in any of its productions to date.   Opening night was “Electric” says director Patrick A’Hearn, who used his industry connections to entice Sally Struthers to perform in this 9 week production.

Set Design staff Aaron Mastin, Phil Carlucci, Matthew Westcott and Curtis Craddock set other “firsts” for this production. The front of the stage was extended into a semi-circle projecting further into the audience with priority seating for patrons available at a counter attached to the semi-circle.

The Grand staircase for the famous scene where Dolly returns to the Harmonica Gardens, the colorful Hat Shop where Dolly sets up the exchange of Horace Vandergelder with Cornelius Hackl as the object of affection for her rival Irene Molloy, the moving train that carries passengers from the Yonkers Depot  and the actual dinner Dolly enjoys as the set behind her changes from a restaurant to a courtroom are just the highlights of the attention to detail in set and prop design throughout the show.

Superb vocals fill the theater with familiar and heartwarming songs.  Amazing dance and precision choreography orchestrated by Christopher Noffke, blend seamlessly with the excellent dramatizations performed in each scene.  Vibrant period costumes designed by Gaye Law bring everything together for this enormously talented cast who command the stage with professionalism and energy.

The versatile Jim Lawson, (who can forget his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray”), playing the stubborn, wealthy Horace Vandergelder is perfect next to the confident, hilarious and uncompromising Sally Struthers as Dolly Gallagher Levi.  Rachel Nahrwold in her debut role at Riverside Theater as Irene Molloy is captivating, not only to the audience but also to Cornelius Hackl played by Matt James.  Matt, I am pleased to say, is becoming a familiar face at Riverside as you may remember him from “Chicago”, “Hairspray” and most recently “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.  Another welcome and familiar face in Hello Dolly is Calvin Rgister, Jr. who plays Barnaby, the delightfully funny partner in mischief to Cornelius Hackl.

The cast is huge and I could go on and on with accolades about each performer. Alas I must hurry and get this published because you only have one more month to see this fabulous show running through July 3rd..

Call now, bring the whole family and be ready to smile and laugh and enjoy a remarkable evening of LIVE theater.
